Complexity It’s Simple Stupid!

OMG do you find yourself going down the rabbit hole of complexity, in an endless tail chase wondering why life is so hard and complicated. For example: That phone answering system that wants you to say yes, input your phone number, say what department you want, then is that support, sales, technical, billing etc only to get put through to the wrong place or be told ‘I’m sorry I don’t recognise what you said’ and tells you to go to the website. But then their website is so hard to navigate, you flick form one page to the next and you can’t find what you need, you use the search function still blank and just when you think you’ve cracked it it wants your 12 digit account number and the password that you were sent that was some improbable form of physics equation for defining the laws of quantum relativity. Its enough to send you insane!

I’m laughing now but we seriously nearly had a full blown IT tantrum on our hands as tried to complete a simple (or so I thought) task. But it made me wonder, since when did we make life so complex? What happened to the days where you could pick up the phone and speak directly to a human being or find out the answers you needed in a few easy steps.

Yes technology is great and it has opened up vast avenues of communication, knowledge and our ability to do things we never dreamed of but when did it replace common sense and the human touch? When did we let systems and automation replace connection and support, and our desire to serve our customers for example or to have a proper chat with our friends? How many times do you find yourself in the the tennis rally of back and forth texting or emails to decide afterwards ‘well that would have been simpler to just call and have a chat’!

Complexity seems to be a ploy that makes us look evolved and advanced because we have superior technology when in fact we should be using it to make things simpler. Yet we don’t need technology to make life complex – just look at the way politics, the education systems or some businesses are run and operated! Lots of red tape, complex systems and that’s not my department that offends people and reduces real interaction and autonomy when it comes to applying what is best for the people we serve.

Its time to go back and make life simple and user friendly and those steps begin with each of us – where can we simplify our own life, relationships and ways of doing things because at the end of the day its in the simple things in life that we derive the greatest joy.

Easy It’s Simple

We wish for life to be easy.

But easy makes you soft.

Easy makes you lazy.

Easy does not encourage growth.

Easy does not ask you to be more.

Easy does not stretch you, push you to the edge and unveil your hidden talents and enormous potential.

Easy allows you to cruise and get stuck in a rut.

Easy offers no challenges.

Easy offers no excitement.

Easy is boring!

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not for making life hard or doing it tough. Yes, I want to be stretched, tested, pushed, challenged and excited by life. What I don’t want is unnecessary complication. Life can be challenging but it can also be simple.

In simplicity I find solace and joy. I am able to be who I am and explore what I can be. Simplicity doesn’t mean life becomes easy it simply becomes well more simple. Less complicated. More enjoyable.

Simplicity allows me more space and time to pause, reflect, take stock and assess my priorities.

So many of us spend our days being busy but not productive. Lost in the complexity when it could all be so simple.

Complexity is like following a recipe with endless steps and lots of ingredients that takes hours to prepare when a soup made in 5 minutes would give you adequate nourishment and the same amount of satisfaction. Simplicity would choose the soup every time.

Why live in a way that drains you of energy and takes up your precious time when it needn’t?

Take a look at your life, see what you can change and make it more simple.
